One, um... one... uh... DisOrDat.

This game won't run/install on Windows XP

Apparently, the folks over at the Microsoft didn't consult with us when making their Windows XP operating system, because most original versions of YDKJ have some trouble working with it. There are two common issues. We shall address them both here, just for you, our devoted fans! We're good like that.

Compatibility Mode
These instructions apply to Jellyvision applications that use the old Berkeley engine. Please note, it doesn't always work, but it's worth a shot. The following titles in particular seem to have problems:

  • Jack V1
  • Jack V2
  • Jack Sports

Windows XP is quite different from its older siblings, and thusly, most of the original versions will not work. In fact, they aren't even compatible. Bummer... But there is a ray of hope. It's called "Compatibility Mode".

Here's how it works: Sometimes the installer doesn't work. Sometimes the game itself doesn't work. A number of things changed in Windows XP that break these older games. To address these problems, Microsoft added the "Compatibility Mode" feature to Windows XP which allows it to mimic some of Window's older quirks for select applications. This seems to allow older software to run.

Setting Windows Compatibility Mode for a Specific Application Follow the general steps below:
If the Install doesn't work, apply these steps to the setup program on the CD-ROM and run it.

While installing the game, make note of the directory the game is being installed into. Find the executable file which starts the game. You can begin by clicking on START from the desktop and selecting "MY COMPUTER" from the Menu. Navigate through the folders until you find the game folder with the executable file.

When the executable file is found. Right-click on the file and select "PROPERTIES" from the drop-down list. A Properties window will appear. Click on the "Compatibility" tab at the top of the window. A box labeled "Compatibility Mode" will appear under the Compatibility tab. Place a checkmark by clicking on the box to the left of the text which reads, "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" Also ensure that the drop-down list below becomes active and that "Windows 98/Window Me" is selected. Apply and verify the changes and start the game again to see if the problem is corrected. If you continue to experience difficulty then please visit the Microsoft XP website.

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT -- The System file is not suitable...blah, blah, blah...
This is a strange error that some WinXP users are getting when trying to install or run the old YDKJ games. This is due to a bug in Microsoft's SP2 Update software. It affects many other old programs, not just YDKJ. It's a bit tricky to fix, and requires a little computer savvy. Microsoft has published a fix at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767

If you still can't get things running, you might want to consider purchasing a freshly minted copy of YDKJ, that was adjusted to run on WinXP. Which is available on this very website.
